Alex enters his Junior year at CSUN next month. He came to the Matadors as a walk-on, out of Valley Christian, in San Jose. With the recent graduation of Cameron Gottfried, Sokol should vie for some of his vacated minutes, along with 2019 Redshirts, Brendan Harrick and Avery Martinez.
Got a chance to stop by the first day of off-season workouts for CSUN, at The Matadome. CSUN finished 13-21 in 2018-19, 7-9 in Big West play, and played in the post season CBI, where they lost to Utah Valley. The Matadors return All-Conference First Teamer, Terrell Gomez, and 2019 Big West Player of the Year, Lamine Diane. Head Coach Mark Gottfried enters his 2nd year in Northridge. Joe Giglio of the News & Observer, breaks down the NCAA penalties issued to NC State, and how they may affect status of CSUN Head Coach Mark Gottfried.(starts at about 1:20)
Gottfried was hired as Head Coach at CSUN on March 12th, 2018. He held the same position at NC State from 2011 to 2017, which is where the violations occurred. It's been an interesting week, to say the least, with the Matadors' program, as Pat Forde, of Yahoo Sports, filed a couple of reports, with regard to Head Coach Mark Gottfried, and his time at NC State.
Joe Giglio, of News & Observer, also commented on the situation, on Thursday's edition of Outside the Lines. (Segment starts at 6:15)
On a more positive note, Terrell Gomez, was selected Player of the Week, with a 35 point, and 9 rebound performance this weekend, in the Drew League. Gomez was a 1st Team All-Big West performer for CSUN in 2018-19, after winning Big West Freshman of the Year in 2017-18. Terrell also set the CSUN record for most three-pointers in a single season, with 117 in 2019, breaking Kyle Kerlegan's record of 98, set in 1991.
The Matadors' 2019-20 schedule has begun to take shape, with announcement of their participation in the 2019 Old Trapper Legends' Classic. They'll play two campus games, at Auburn (Nov 15th) and Richmond (Nov 17th), as well as in a pre-Thanksgiving Tournament in the Green Bay Sub Regional, November 25th and 26th. |
